The Madison Mountaineering K2 expedition team has made the difficult decision to end our climb and head home after beginning our summit push and reaching Camp 1. An unusually warm and dry season in the Karakoram created challenging and hazardous conditions on the mountain. Since our first K2 expedition in 2014, we’ve typically found the route blanketed in snow from Advanced Base Camp upward. This year, even after extending our expedition by nearly two weeks in hopes of new snowfall, the route from Advanced Base Camp to Camp 1 remained bare, with loose rock underfoot. Without snow to hold it in place, rockfall became a constant threat throughout the season. In the interest of safety, we’ve chosen to step away for now—and return to the mountains when conditions are right. Expedition leader, Terray Sylvester checks in with this dispatch from the Karakoram:

Hello from Chuspang Camp, below Laila Peak (6096m/20,000ft)! This is a wrap-up dispatch for the 2025 Madison Mountaineering Karakoram expeditions.

Today we trekked here from K2 Base Camp (4968m/16,300ft). It was a spectacular day — clear skies gave us excellent views of the surrounding high peaks as we hiked down the Baltoro Glacier through Concordia (4570m/14,993ft), then over the Gondogoro Pass (5585m/18,323ft) and down to our grassy, alpine tent site.

On August 9, we aborted our summit push on K2 (8611m/28,251ft) and descended back to base camp from Camp 1 (6065m/19,900ft). It was a hard decision. We turned around due to the high rockfall hazard on the Abruzzi Spur from Camp 2 (6700m/21,980ft) down.

This season has been unusually warm and dry in the Karakoram. Normally the route from Advance Base Camp (5303m/17,400ft) to Camp 1 is almost entirely snow-covered. This season, most of it was steep, loose rock, exposed by lack of snow, and by ice retreating from the east side of the Abruzzi. The route on up to Camp 2 was also in relatively bad shape, which matters because rocks can fall from near Camp 2 down roughly the length of the route. Since arriving in base camp in early July, we’d hoped that fresh snow would stabilize the lower mountain. But although we extended our expedition by nearly two weeks while waiting for a summit window, almost no snow fell below 6,500m over the course of the season. Precip fell as rain instead. The dry conditions made it very challenging to effectively manage the objective hazard and provide an adequate margin of safety for our team — even considering the relatively high amount of risk that any ascent of K2 entails. Throughout the season, numerous minor rockfall-related injuries and many near misses — and one very sad fatality related to loose rock — underscored the danger.

So, overall it was a tough season in the Karakoram. We tried to respect the conditions on the mountains, and heed the very good advice that getting to the summit is optional, while coming home safely is mandatory. We’re looking forward to returning to Pakistan next year — hopefully after a wetter winter!

Hello, from K2 Base Camp! The Madison Mountaineering Karakoram expedition teams have arrived in their home away from home for the next few weeks, set to climb K2, Broad Peak, and a peak never before climbed to the summit by mankind. Turning the corner at Concordia revealed clear, unobstructed views of K2 and surrounding peaks, fueling the team for what’s to come. Today was another memorable day in the Karakoram! Expedition leader, Terray Sylvester checks in with this dispatch from base camp:

Greetings from K2 Base Camp (4968m/16,300ft)! We arrived here this afternoon after another spectacular day of trekking up the Baltoro. Skies were blue most of the day, which meant we had excellent views of K2 (8611m/28,251ft) and Broad Peak (8051m/26,414ft). It felt great to move into our box tents, and start settling into the camp that will be our home away from home for the next few weeks. Tomorrow we’re looking forward to a rest day. All is well. We’ll be in touch then.

The Madison Mountaineering Karakoram expeditions team made excellent progress on their trek today, passing beyond Goro 2—where we had originally planned to camp—and continuing further up the valley. This puts us in position to get our first view of K2 tomorrow and reach K2 Base Camp, which will be our home for the next few weeks. It was another day of great weather and high spirits here in Pakistan! Expedition leader, Terray Sylvester checks in with this dispatch from the Karakoram:

Hello from our camp below Concordia (4570m/14,993ft)! Today the team continued to feel strong. So we trekked from Urdukas (4034m/13,235ft), past Goro 2 (4285m/14,058ft), to this camp on the Baltoro Glacier not far below Concordia. Camping here made for a slightly longer day today, but it puts us in position to reach K2 Base Camp (4968m/16,300ft) tomorrow, our home for the next few weeks. The weather was perfect today — not too hot despite sunny skies. The clear skies afforded us views of Masherbrum (7821m/25,659ft), Muztagh Tower (7276m/23,871ft), Gasherbrum IV (7925m/26,001ft) and Broad Peak (8051m/26,414ft). We’re looking forward to our first view of K2 (8611m/28,251ft) from Concordia tomorrow morning. We’ll be in touch tomorrow!

The Madison Mountaineering Karakoram expedition teams are nearing their base camp at the foot of K2! The trek has been excellent so far with great views of awe-inspiring peaks and time well spent together as a team. It won’t be long until we’re settling into our base camp tents, beginning skills review, and organizing equipment for the climbing to come! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from the Karakoram:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the K2 (8611m/28,251ft) expedition team along with our Unclimbed Peak team and Broad Peak (8051m/26,414ft) climber. We are trekking to base camp (4968m/16,300ft)!

We’ve had a great trek so far. We’re at Goro 2 Camp (4285m/14,058ft), just before Concordia (4570m/14,993ft). We’ve had great weather, amazing views of all the surrounding peaks, and looking forward to arriving in K2 Base Camp in a day or two.

All is well here! We’re having a great time and will check in soon.

The 2023 Madison Mountaineering K2 expedition team is doing great in K2 base camp! Preparations have begun for their inaugural acclimatization rotation, with organizing gear and technical skills review in the surrounding areas. With good weather in the forecast, the team will set off in a few days time higher up the mountain to familiarize themselves with the route and acclimate to the altitude they’ll experience while climbing K2. Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from K2 base camp:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Madison Mountaineering K2 (8611m/28,251ft) expedition team. Today’s July 6th and we had a great day in base camp (4968m/16,300ft)! We have been resting here for a few days since arriving on July 3rd. It’s been snowy, foggy weather, a little windy up high. So, we are just resting in base camp, organizing our gear and doing a little training. (We’re) getting ready for our first rotation in a few days time once the weather improves!

We’re doing great here! Unfortunately the Starlink is not working. Apparently [garbled] disabled their service to Pakistan recently. So we have no internet access at the moment, just our satellite phones and Garmin inReach for text messaging. The cell tower recently installed 2 years ago in Concordia (4570m/14,993ft) is not functioning, so we’re not able to use that for data off of our smartphones. So, just satellite phones here at the moment – a bit of a digital detox! (It’s) good for some of us to step away from the connectivity we’re used to on a regular basis. But we’re enjoying each others company, having some good meals here and staying healthy. We’re having fun!

So, all is well here in K2 base camp. We’re about to start a film and will be off to bed after that!

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the K2 expedition. Today is June 29th and we are at K2 base camp. It has been snowing a lot the last few days and we had a tough time getting up to base camp with all of our porters but we made it today. We set up our camp hastily just to create some shelter. We are looking forward to the snow letting up in the next couple days. We probably have two and a half to three feet here at base camp, waiting now for the weather to change and let up. Everyone is doing well and we just had a nice dinner and heading off to bed. Looking forward to a nice rest day tomorrow. All is well here at K2 base camp and we will check in soon.
