Up to Low Camp!

After arriving in base camp the day prior, the team wasted no time on their move up Mount Vinson! From their base camp, the team heads up the Branscomb Glacier, having to navigate some crevassing along the way before reaching low camp. After assembling camp, the team refueled with a nice dinner all together. With more good weather in the coming days, the team will continue their ascent of Antarctica’s highest peak. Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from Mount Vinson:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition team. We are up at low camp (2774m/9,100ft). We had a great day climbing from Vinson Base Camp (2140m/7,020ft) up to low camp. We were in the clouds part of the day, but then the clouds parted! So we got some nice views of Mount Vinson and the surrounding peaks: Mount Shinn (4661m/15,292ft) and Mount Epperly (4359m/14,301ft).

We made  good time getting up here to low camp and then built our camp, set up our own kitchen tent. We had a nice dinner: some sausages, mashed potatoes, and broccoli, and a little chocolate and pineapple for dessert.

So everyone is doing great. There’s good weather here, very calm and (garbled).

Mount Vinson Expedition #2

The Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team arrived in base camp after a few days of anticipation while they waited out the weather in Union Glacier Camp! After touching down in the Ellsworth Mountain Range, the team excitedly got settled into their camp, ate dinner, and prepared for the move up to Low Camp. The team is in high spirits and ready to get the climb underway! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from Mount Vinson Base Camp:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition number two of the season.

Today, our team arrived at Vinson Base Camp (2140m/7,020ft) and we got settled in, built our camp, had some dinner, and checked some of our gear, our equipment for the climb, and now we are off to bed. We had a beautiful flight over from Union Glacier Camp (700m/2,297ft), got to see lots of peaks on the way!

Everyone is in good spirits, feeling strong, happy to be here after a delay of a couple of days. But all is well here and we are really excited to get our expedition, our climb underway here. So hopefully we will be moving up to Low Camp (2774m/9,100ft) tomorrow. All is well here and we’ll check in soon from Mount Vinson!

A white Christmas on Mount Vinson!

The Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team celebrated Christmas today with a good meal, friends, and in one spectacular place! While friends and family are missed, we are grateful for this time spent together as a team sharing memories we won’t soon forget. The team is settled into their base camp and will return to Union Glacier Camp soon, followed shortly after by making the return trips home, marking the conclusion of our first Mount Vinson expedition of the season. The Mount Vinson expedition team checks in with this celebratory dispatch from Antarctica:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in from Mount Vinson Base Camp (2140m/7,020ft). Merry Christmas! We’re all here just having a great meal and celebrating our climb of Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft)!

Summit success on Mount Vinson!

It’s with great excitement to share that the Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team has reached the summit of Mount Vinson, the highest point in all of Antarctica! The team could not have asked for a more perfect day, climbing in one of the most remote and pristine places on the planet under beautiful, clear-blue skies. Not a bad way to celebrate the holiday! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from the summit of Mount Vinson with climbers, Art and Kevin:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition – today is Christmas Eve and I am up here at the summit of Mount Vinson with Art and Kevin! We have a beautiful day here, almost all to ourselves and couldn’t ask for better conditions. What a great team and great company to be up here with! Here’s Art:

In position for the summit push!

The Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team has reached their high camp and crawled into their sleeping bags for the night. Today, they climbed under a beautiful, Antarctic sky making for near-perfect climbing conditions. The team is moving well together and will look to make their push for the summit in the coming days! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from Mount Vinson:

Hey, this is Garrett calling in from high camp (3536m/11,600ft) on Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft), here with Benny! Our first Mount Vinson expedition of the season, we’re up here with Art, Kevin, and Sanjeev.

We had a good day climbing from low camp (2774m/9,100ft) up to high camp – beautiful, sunny weather, calm winds, great views all around! It was a long day with heavy packs, but we got up here in good style, set up camp, had some dinner, and now we are off to bed. We’re going to see how conditions look tomorrow. We might go for the summit or we might take a rest day, so to be determined.

But, all as well. Everybody is doing good up here at high camp and we are excited to see what tomorrow brings! We’ll check in soon.

Cozied up in Low Camp!

The Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team has left their base camp and settled into their temporary home at low camp! Here, they’ll spend another day resting and reviewing technical skills that they’ll need higher on the mountain. With great weather so far, the team hopes for more sunny skies as they continue to ascend Antarctica’s highest peak. Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from Mount Vinson:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in from Low Camp (2774m/9,100ft) on Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) with our first expedition team of the season. We had a great day coming up from base camp (2140m/7,020ft) – myself, Benny with Art, Kevin, and Sanjeev. It was nice, sunny weather, and then clouds came in for a little bit and cooled off. By the time we got to camp, the skies parted and the sun came back out! So we had a nice evening here getting camp set up, digging out our cache, cooking dinner, and now we are off to bed a little after midnight.

So, we are excited to take a rest day tomorrow, which is really today, and review some fixed-climb climbing techniques, check the weather forecast, and see if we can move up the following day if everything looks good.

So everyone is doing great and we are excited to be here! We are enjoying some fabulous views and lots of other nice teams and climbers on the mountain. So we are having a great time here! We’ll check in soon.

Vinson Base Camp

After a short stay in Union Glacier Camp, the Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson team has, once again, packed their bags and flown to Mount Vinson Base Camp! The team will officially start the climb from here, spending the coming days ascending the frozen continent’s highest peak. Expedition leader, Garrett Madison checks in with this dispatch from Vinson Base Camp:

Hey, this is Garrett calling in for the first Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition of the season! We just arrived in Union Glacier (700m/2,297ft) and met our fellow climbers, Art Muir and Kevin, who just came off ski last degree. They had a great ski to the South Pole, flew back to Union Glacier a day ahead of us. Also, we flew in with Sanjeev. So the five of us flew from Union Glacier to Mount Vinson (2140m/7,020ft), arrived today, set up our camp, had a nice dinner, and we are heading to bed.

We’re really happy to be here! It’s just beautiful weather, spectacular scenery, and we are ready and very excited to get our climb underway! All as well here on Vinson. We’ll check in soon!

See You Soon, Vinson!

The Madison Mountaineering Antarctica season has come to a close after another safe and successful season on the ice! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison, checks in with one final dispatch from Antarctica:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition team.

Welp, the teams have all concluded their expeditions on Vinson, reaching the summit in great weather! I am back at Union Glacier Camp (700m/2,297ft) just waiting for the next flight out to Punta Arenas, Chile (34m/112ft) on the 757 scheduled for January 14.

It’s nice to be here and wrap up our season! It was a great season here in Antarctica – thanks so much to ALE for all the support. We’re looking forward to returning next year!

Departure from Antarctica

After another successful expedition, our team has packed their bags, loaded the plane, and said their ‘farewells’ to Antarctica! The team had a great time experiencing the remote and pristine nature that comes with this special place, all in while creating lasting memories that we will not soon forget! We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off 2023 than on the ice with friends, new and old. The excitement for the next Antarctica season has already started to build! Expedition leader, Garrett Madison, checks in with this departing dispatch from Mount Vinson:

Hello! This is Garrett calling in for the second Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) team with Conrad Anker – today is Wednesday, January 11th.

The team got down from Mount Vinson High Camp (3536m/11,600ft) yesterday all the way back down to Base Camp (2140m/7,020ft), flew from Base Camp to Union Glacier (700m/2,297ft), and then flew from Union Glacier back to Chile (34m/112ft) – all the way home! So, it was a big day for the team after having summited Mount Vinson the day before, coming all the way down and heading out all in one day!

I’m back at Union Glacier Camp here for a few days sorting gear and equipment, and wrapping up our season here in Antarctica! It’s been a great season and looking forward to coming back to Antarctica next year.

Perfect Season on Vinson!

We’ve just received word that the Madison Mountaineering Mount Vinson expedition team has safely and successfully reached the summit of Mount Vinson, the tallest point in Antarctica! After some winds in the days prior while ascending to High Camp, the team made their final few steps to the summit under blue skies, calm winds, and great views all around in a truly magical place. Expedition leader, Garrett Madison, checks in with todays dispatch from Mount Vinson:

Hey! This is Garrett calling in for the Mount Vinson (4892m/16,050ft) expedition team number two.

Today we summited Mount Vinson! We had a beautiful day, great weather, looked around, amazing views, calm winds, and just a really special experience up there. We had the summit all to ourselves and really had a great day!

So, wonderful summit day. Now we’re back in High Camp (3536m/11,600ft), just had dinner, going to bed and we’ll make our plan to go down to Base Camp (2140m/7,020ft) tomorrow or the next day!
